About Kim

I write about culture, food, family, community, equity, foster care + poverty.

I'm a social scientist, and a James Beard award winning memoirist. And I wrote a book: The Meth Lunches: Food + Longing in an American City with St. Martin’s Press. I was formerly an Assitant Professor of Women and Gender Studies at Pace University and still do a lot of guest lecturing and speaking.

I write about people enmeshed in mental illness, family separation, poverty,
addiction, trauma, incarceration at the intersection of food, and how we as society and culture are complicit in keeping people down and out and what we can do to have stronger families and communities.

I’ve written for or been written about in such publications as the Washington Post, Slate, Guardian, The Rumpus, Bon Appetit and more. Some fun reviews of my book and my work appear the Las Vegas Weekly, Kirkus Review, FERN, Shelf Awareness, and Publishers Weekly.

I post essays in my newsletter on Thursdays. Go here to check it out and subscribe to get me in your inbox weekly: https://KimFoster.substack.com

I’m a former New Yorker who has fallen in love with the desert and West Coast life and living in the beautiful-weirdness of Las Vegas, Nevada with my husband, David, Lucy (19), Edie (18), Raffi (13) and Desi (9), 2 dogs, 2 cats, 4 bunnies + a backyard farm full of chickens and turkeys.

Kim's Newsletter. Essays every week in your inbox.

This is where I'm doing my best writing these days.

Come join me (just about) every Thursday for an essay about how we live, work and play in our communities.

I write often about culture, food, cooking. family, parenting, foster care, adoption, community, sex, equity, women's health, mature womanhood + poverty.
